Urad Dal is small and healthy black gram beans. It is loaded with Vitamin B, iron, and essential nutrients and is a rich source of vegetarian protein, a good substitute for non-vegetarian food. Urad dhuli dal is also known as white lentils. It is grown mostly in the southern parts of South Asia.

These beans are devoid of cholesterol and relatively rich in protein and B-complex vitamins. They are rich in iron at 7.57 mg or 95% of the RDI (Reference Daily Intake), which improves memory, cognition, and helps prevent anaemia.

Preparation and Serving Ideas

Before you cook Urad beans, soak them overnight or for 6 – 10 hours. Soaking and pressure cooking consumes less time, but you can prepare in a slow cooker. The immature urad pods may be used as vegetables. It is often prepared in the same way as other legumes. Rinse one half cup of Whole Urad and drain the water. Add fresh water and the beans in a pot. For one cup of beans, use three cups of water. Bring it to boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for 20 – 25 minutes until tender.
