Product description
There is a reason lychee season is circled on the calendar in so many homes. For a few short weeks each summer, this fragrant, rose-scented fruit arrives — and then it is gone. At Rootz Organics, we bring it to you the way it should be: picked ripe, handled fast, and full of flavor.
WHAT MAKES LYCHEE SPECIAL
Beneath that rough red shell is translucent, pearl-white flesh — juicy, floral, and delicately sweet with a hint of rose and citrus. It is one of the most refreshing fruits you can eat in the Gulf summer, and one of the most loved across South Asian and East Asian kitchens.
WHY FRESHNESS IS EVERYTHING (THE SCIENCE)
Lychee is a non-climacteric fruit: unlike mango or banana, it does NOT continue to ripen after it is picked. That means it must be harvested ripe — and from that moment, the clock is ticking. Lychee loses moisture, colour and flavour quickly.
This is why we air-freight our lychees rather than rely on long cold storage. The shorter the journey from tree to table, the closer the fruit is to how it tasted in the orchard. Commercial supply chains often use sulphur-dioxide (SO2) treatment to hold the red skin colour for weeks — we prioritise speed and natural handling instead.
SOURCED FROM INDIA
Our lychees are sourced from India, home to some of the world's most prized varieties. Hand-picked at peak ripeness and air-freighted to the UAE.
Few fruits announce the arrival of summer quite like lychee. Grown in the fertile orchards of Muzaffarpur, Bihar, these delicate fruits are prized for their floral aroma, juicy texture and naturally sweet flavour.
HOW TO SELECT & STORE
- Look for: firm fruit with bright-to-pinkish red shells. A little browning of the shell is natural and does not affect the flesh.
- Store: keep refrigerated and eat within 4-5 days for best flavour and juiciness.
- At room temperature: enjoy within 1-2 days.
- Freeze: peel, de-seed and freeze the flesh in an airtight container for smoothies and desserts out of season.
Tip: do not leave at room temperature in the heat for long — lychee is delicate and best kept cool.
HOW TO USE & SERVE - UAE & INTERNATIONAL
In a UAE kitchen, lychee crosses every table - South Asian, East Asian, Arab and Western. A few ways families across the Emirates enjoy it:
- The simplest way: chill, peel, and eat. The perfect cooling snack in the summer heat.
- Breakfast bowl: peeled lychee over Rootz Organics A2 Curd with a drizzle of raw honey and a few nuts.
- Lychee mocktail / cooler: muddle peeled lychee with mint, lime and sparkling water - a refreshing non-alcoholic drink for iftar, majlis and summer hosting.
- Fruit platter & desserts: pair with mango, melon and berries for an entertaining platter; spoon over kulfi, ice cream or panna cotta; or fold into a fruit custard or trifle.
- East-Asian style: add to a chilled fruit salad or a light syrup with a hint of rose - the classic way lychee is served across Asia.
- Entertaining & gifting: a bowl of chilled lychee is a standout at Ramadan iftar spreads, Eid gatherings and summer majlis hosting, and makes a premium seasonal fruit gift.
