Product description

Flat beans — broad, flat-podded green beans, also called helda or romano beans — are a step up from the everyday round green bean. The wide pods are tender and sweet, with a soft, almost buttery texture when cooked, and they soak up flavour beautifully.

HOW TO SELECT & STORE

Store: refrigerate in the crisper drawer, unwashed, for up to 4-5 days.

Look for: firm, bright pods that snap cleanly.

Trim the stem ends before cooking; the flat pods may have a fine string to pull.

Do not wash until ready to use.

HOW TO USE & SERVE

Flat beans are a quick, versatile vegetable for any UAE kitchen.

  • The simplest way: trim, then steam or blanch 4-6 minutes and toss with olive oil, lemon and sea salt.
  • Sauteed: with garlic, chilli and a squeeze of lemon as a fast side.
  • Indian style: as a poriyal or sabzi with mustard seeds, curry leaves and coconut.
  • Braised (Mediterranean): slow-cook with tomato, garlic and olive oil until meltingly soft.
  • Stir-fried: with soy, ginger and sesame, East-Asian style.

Pairs beautifully with both South Asian and Mediterranean meals
