Supporting Local Organic Farms in the UAE: A Commitment That Has Been at the Heart of Rootz Since Day One
Every harvest has a story. Every farmer deserves our support. And every family has the power to make a difference.
There is something truly special about knowing where your food comes from.
Knowing the farm where your vegetables were grown. Understanding the care that went into nurturing them. Meeting the people who wake up every morning to grow food for our families.
At Rootz Organics, supporting local organic farms across the UAE has never been just another business initiative. It has been at the heart of our journey from the very beginning.
Every year, as the local growing season approaches, we look forward to visiting our partner farms, meeting our farmers and discovering what they have been cultivating.
And every year, we return with an even stronger conviction.
Our local farmers deserve to be seen, appreciated and supported by more households across the UAE.
This blog is dedicated to them.
And to every member of our Rootz community who has the power to make that support possible.
Why Supporting Local Farmers Matters to Us
When we started Rootz Organics, our vision was never simply to create another organic grocery store.
We wanted to build a meaningful connection between the people who grow our food and the families who consume it.
We wanted our community to understand that behind every bunch of spinach, every cucumber and every freshly harvested herb is a farmer who has invested time, resources, knowledge and tremendous effort.
Growing food in the UAE is no ordinary task.
Our farmers work within a challenging climate, managing high temperatures, limited water resources and seasonal growing conditions.
It takes planning, patience, agricultural expertise and a genuine passion for farming.
And when we visit these farms, we see something that cannot always be communicated through a product label.
We see commitment.
Commitment to growing good food.
Commitment to responsible farming practices.
Commitment to making locally grown produce available to families living in the UAE.
We believe that commitment deserves our support.
Every Year, We Return to Our Farms. And Every Visit Reinforces Our Purpose.

One of the most rewarding parts of our journey at Rootz is the relationship we have built with our local farming partners.
We don't want our connection with farmers to begin and end with purchasing their harvest.
We make it a point to visit our farms year after year, understand their growing practices, learn about their challenges and explore the crops they are introducing.
These visits remind us why we started.
They also help us appreciate the realities of farming — the uncertainty of harvests, the importance of seasonal planning and the effort required to bring fresh vegetables from the farm to our tables.
Sometimes a particular crop is abundant.
Sometimes the harvest is smaller than expected.
And sometimes our farmers surprise us with vegetables and herbs that many of us have never tried before.
That's the beauty of working closely with farms.
We learn to appreciate food as a seasonal harvest, rather than expecting everything to be available all year round.
This Growing Season, Meet Three Unique Greens From Our Local UAE Farms

One of the most exciting parts of supporting local farms is discovering the diversity of what can be grown here.
This season, we're particularly excited to introduce three interesting greens and herbs to our Rootz community.
Each brings its own flavour, culinary possibilities and nutritional interest.
1. Malabar Spinach — A Leafy Green Worth Discovering
Malabar spinach may not be as familiar as regular spinach, but it is a wonderful ingredient to introduce into your kitchen.
Despite its name, Malabar spinach is not botanically the same as conventional spinach. It is a leafy climbing plant, commonly known as Basella alba or Basella rubra, depending on the variety.
Its thick, tender leaves have a mild flavour and a slightly slippery texture when cooked.
Like other leafy greens, Malabar spinach can contribute vitamins, minerals and plant compounds to a varied diet.

Try adding it to a vegetable stir-fry with garlic and cold-pressed olive oil, including it in a warming lentil soup, or gently sautéing it as a side dish.
It can also be used in Asian-style broths, curries and other cooked vegetable dishes.
At Rootz, we encourage families to explore different varieties of greens rather than relying on the same two or three vegetables every week.
Dietary diversity is one of the simplest ways to introduce a wider range of nutrients and plant compounds into our meals.
And Malabar spinach is a lovely place to start.
2. Creeping Thyme — A Small Herb With Beautiful Culinary Possibilities
Sometimes the smallest herbs bring the most character to a dish.
Creeping thyme is a low-growing aromatic herb with delicate leaves and a distinctive herbal fragrance.
It belongs to the thyme family and can bring a subtle earthy flavour to everyday cooking.
Thyme contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds, including thymol and other plant constituents, although the amounts vary by variety and growing conditions.
We particularly love how herbs can transform simple vegetables without requiring elaborate sauces or seasonings.

Use the tender leaves sparingly in roasted vegetables, olive-oil dressings, soups or homemade herb marinades.
Try it with roasted potatoes, mushrooms, zucchini or carrots, alongside Rootz Early Harvest Extra Virgin Organic Olive Oil.
It's a beautiful reminder that cooking with good ingredients doesn't have to be complicated.
A few fresh herbs, quality olive oil and seasonal vegetables can create a wonderful meal.
3. Wild Mint — Fresh, Fragrant and Wonderfully Versatile
Mint is a familiar ingredient in many kitchens, but exploring different varieties can introduce exciting new flavours.
Our locally grown wild mint is one of the herbs we're particularly pleased to bring to the Rootz community this season.
Mint is known for its refreshing aroma, which comes from naturally occurring aromatic compounds in its leaves.
Its versatility makes it a wonderful addition to Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian cooking.

Add freshly chopped leaves to tabbouleh, yogurt dips, lentil salads or vegetable bowls.
Pair it with cucumber and lemon for a refreshing salad, or use a few leaves to flavour water and homemade beverages.
One of our favourite combinations is fresh mint, cucumber, lemon and good-quality olive oil.
Simple, refreshing and full of flavour.
We hope these three unique greens encourage our community to experiment with more locally grown ingredients this season.
Because sometimes, supporting a farmer begins with being willing to try something new.
Why Choose Locally Grown Organic Vegetables in the UAE?

There are several meaningful reasons to make locally grown produce part of your weekly shopping routine.
Fresher Harvests and Shorter Supply Chains
When vegetables are grown closer to home, they can often reach consumers with less time spent in international transport.
This is particularly valuable for delicate leafy greens and herbs, where freshness can influence flavour, texture and shelf life.
Of course, freshness also depends on harvesting, handling and storage. But choosing seasonal local produce creates opportunities for shorter supply chains.
Supporting Responsible Organic Farming
Organic farming focuses on production practices that restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilisers and follow defined agricultural standards.
We value farmers who are committed to responsible cultivation, soil health and thoughtful use of resources.
Organic certification and growing methods should always be assessed carefully, rather than assuming that all locally grown produce is automatically organic.
Encouraging Agricultural Diversity
When consumers show interest in different varieties of vegetables and herbs, they create opportunities for farmers to grow a wider selection of crops.
This is one reason we're excited about Malabar spinach, creeping thyme and wild mint.
We want our community to discover what our farmers are capable of growing, beyond the familiar vegetables we purchase every week.
Supporting the Local Agricultural Economy
Every purchase of locally grown produce creates demand for the work of UAE farmers.
When more households consciously choose local vegetables, they help create a market for these harvests.
That matters for the long-term viability of local agriculture.
It also supports a more connected food community, where consumers understand and appreciate the people behind their ingredients.
The Real Meaning of Farm-to-Table
Farm-to-table is a phrase we hear frequently.
But for us, it is much more than a food trend.
It is about relationships.
Relationships between farmers and the land.
Between farmers and businesses like Rootz.
And most importantly, between the people who grow food and the families who enjoy it.
We want to help make that connection more visible.
When our community purchases a locally grown vegetable through Rootz, they are participating in a food system that gives local growers access to more customers.
And when our farmers receive continued support, it encourages the cultivation of seasonal produce for the local market.
We want our community to see the farmer behind the vegetable, not just the price on the label.
A Simple Request to Our Rootz Community This Growing Season
We often speak about making healthier food choices.
Including more vegetables.
Eating a wider variety of plant foods.
Choosing seasonal produce.
Understanding the source of our ingredients.
But this season, we'd like to encourage one more habit.
Before you fill your shopping basket, look for what's growing locally.
It doesn't have to mean changing everything you buy.
Start by choosing a few locally grown vegetables every week.
Try a leafy green you've never cooked before.
Experiment with a fresh herb.
Ask questions about where your food comes from.
Share a recipe featuring UAE-grown vegetables with a friend.
These may seem like small actions, but when more households make them consistently, they can create meaningful demand for local produce.
And that's how a community can make a difference.
Our Commitment to UAE Farmers Continues
As Rootz Organics grows, one of our greatest aspirations is to bring more local farmers and more UAE households together.
We want to continue visiting our farms, listening to our growers, discovering their harvests and introducing our community to ingredients they may not find in their everyday shopping baskets.
We also want our farmers to feel proud that their produce is reaching families who appreciate the work behind it.
This commitment has been part of Rootz from the beginning.
And it will continue to guide our journey.
Because building a better food community isn't only about what we eat.
It's also about who we choose to support through the food we buy.

To our farmers, thank you for your dedication, your patience and the work you put into every harvest.
To our Rootz community, thank you for choosing to support the people who grow our food.
And to those who are just discovering locally grown UAE produce, we invite you to be part of this journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Locally grown organic produce travels a shorter distance, so it reaches you fresher, and every purchase directly supports farmers growing food here in the UAE.
Malabar spinach is a heat-loving climbing vine, not a true spinach. It has thick, glossy leaves with a mild flavour and is used in dals, soups, and stir-fries.
Most local farming in the UAE happens in the cooler months, roughly from autumn through spring, when temperatures suit leafy greens and herbs.
Rootz Organics offers all three this season, grown on local UAE farms, with delivery across Dubai and Abu Dhabi via rootzorganics.com.
